Katharina’s articles

Hello everybody!

My name is Katharina Bunk, I am 26 years old and working as a scientific researcher and PhD student of Biology in the beautiful city of Freiburg – the sunniest city of Germany ! In my research I am investigating branching and axes in different plant species, to abstract and implement them for branched building structures (find more info here).

Before starting to work in the ‘Plant Biomechanics Group’ at the University of Freiburg (find more info here) in November 2014, I studied Biology at the University of Munich, followed by the Master Program ‘Bionik/ Biomimetics in Energy Systems’ at the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences in Villach/ Austria. As I always enjoyed to work in the field of botany (scientifically – but also in the sense of growing vegetables at home), I concluded my studies with a Master thesis in Plant Biomechanics at the Technical University of Dresden. I conducted a morphological and biomechanical analysis of the leaf stalk of a palm from Africa with enormously large leaves, which are very stable and highly interesting to investigate. Now I am very happy to continue working in a similar field of research in Freiburg.

The field of Biomimetics has always fascinated me ever since I started to study biology. Besides doing research myself, I particularly enjoy to share my fascination with other people via workshops, courses or now: this blog…. so: have fun, be curious and start to see nature with other eyes. 🙂
